Does the foundation sponsor any events during the year? Yes. The Gussie Wortham Foundation Inc. with help from our donors and sponsors hold an Annual School supply giveaway, Thanksgiving Basket giveaway, Support local youth, high school and adult teams in summer, travel tournaments and amateur leagues. The Gussie Wortham Foundation Inc. also holds its' Annual B-Ball Classic in August attracting over 300 youth, high school and adult participant's from the greater Connecticut and Sprinfield area. All of our members volunteer time to various community events throughout the year. Who operates the foundation? The foundation is run by a volunteer staff from different backgrounds throughout the greater Hartford/East Hartford area. Our staff is made up of the following: Social Worker, 2 Special Education Par-Educators, Pro-Am League Administrator, College student/athlete and a Behavioral Manager/High School Coach. Why was this foundation started? The Gussie Wortham Foundation Inc. was started May 2004 in honor of the late Gussie Wortham who was brutally murdered by her estranged husband in 1981. She was the proud and loving mother of 3 daughter's and 1 son, who was in the process of changing her life for the betterment of her children. The Gussie Wortham Foundation Inc. was started as a resource for families in need of assistance related to domestic violence and the need for positive mentors in our community. Who founded this foundation? The Gussie Wortham Foundation Inc. was founded by Executive Director Kenneth Thompson, the younger brother of Gussie Wortham. How does the foundation receive funding? The Gussie Wortham Foundation Inc. Holds its' Annual B-Ball Classic in August, local media coverage by the Hartford Courant, Channel 3 Eyewitness News, contacting local and long distance businesses per grants or requesting Charitable contributions and various fund raising events throughout the year. What area does the foundation serve? The Gussie Wortham Foundation Inc. serves not only the Greater Hartford area, we also serve surrounding cities and towns in Connecticut. What services do you provide? We are a confidential resource site for families at risk , who cannnot go the normal channels of finding support (medical, shelter, legal assistance and support for the Incarcerated (and their families)and individuals with substance abuse issues). We also offer a mentor program for young men and women in the Greater Hartford Area. We have presently incorporated an After School Program at Clark Street School in collaboration with our new community partner The Greater Hartford Pro-Am. There are no fee for these services. Donations are accepted by the foundation.
